plastic toy railway set, wooden broom handles, eye screws, cable ties, wire, plaster, microcrystalline wax, no more nails, frame sealant, floodlight
exhibited at TRIPTYCH, 28-30 Clarendon Road, Leeds, June 2012
The second remaking of Buckminster Fuller's geodesic dome - this time constructed with an external cladding of cast plaster and microcrystalline wax panels.
The structure's level of finish varies across its surface. Areas that look professionally sealed exist alongside areas visibly less so, revealing somewhat awkward gaps where it is possible to peer inside the person-sized object.
Being in a dark space, the work's exterior lighting effects are utterly dependent on this graded level of finish. Where a perfect bond hasn't formed, the floodlight positioned inside highlights this gap and light escapes, forming fractal projections on the surrounding walls.
