An interactive floor-based piece, 5:49 challenges conceptions of material tactility and feasibilty.
The piece's title is a simple visual ratio. 5 cardboard boxes stand on 49 A4 pieces of paper. The pieces of paper are printed with black dots, composing a highly digitalised photographic image of bubble wrap on a surface of pebbles.
The cardboard boxes are actually cast in a plaster of reinforced structural strength and so they are able to be walked over. They form a bridge over the computer-generated surface. Their presence provides a secret and unexpected sense of solidity.
